Beth: Transition from Middle School to High School

During the elementary and middle school years, Beth had numerous opportunities to be fully included with all students in a variety of settings. She was part of a "typical" class, joined after-school sports activities and clubs, and enjoyed outings with peers.

Shortly after her freshman year in high school began, it became clear to Beth and her family that the mainly segregated "Life Room" model was not going to provide a satisfactory educational experience for her. For the first time in her life, Beth was separated from many of her friends and the classes that seemed most interesting to her were not offered to her. Even lunch in the cafeteria with other students did not seem to be an option. It became clear to Beth and her family that the school did not have a sense of Beth's personal vision of how her education could be designed in order to meet academic and personal goals.

Beth and her family decided to engage in person-centered future planning facilitated by Beth's Community Bridges Family Support Liaison. They invited several key school supporters to be involved in the process. The planning process enabled Beth and her supporters to clearly articulate Beth's current interests, strengths, talents, and support needs as well as identify some goals for the future that Beth would like to work toward.

About Martha Perkse

The school helped Beth choose and participate (with appropriate supports) in typical classes that would enhance the academic and "functional skill" areas that are most important to Beth. She also chose several classes of personal interest such as jewelry design and horticulture. Beth was connected with a group of freshman students with whom she has had lunch in the school cafeteria every day. Beth joined the drama club and became a team assistant for track and field. Beth's parents arranged for her to join a jazz dance class for teens at a local dance school, and they've been bringing her to her swim team practices twice per week. These opportunities in Beth's school and community came about because of, and are supported through, the creativity, energy and collaborative efforts of supporters from several areas of Beth's life.
